SARL Early Morning Coffee QSO Party

SARL Early Morning Coffee QSO Party

A Great Start to the Day…

The Early Morning Coffee QSO Party is designed to spark interest and activity on the 80 m and 40 m bands in the early hours of the day. It’s a simple and fun phone-only contest, where the goal is to make contact with as many early risers as possible. A unique twist is that scoring works on a sliding scale based on the age of the operator you work—adding an extra layer of strategy to every QSO.

Besides the fun of the contest itself, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to collect stations for your WAZS award and fill in any missing Grid Squares on your map.

The contest kicked off at 06:00 and ran for just one hour. I was ready right at the start and managed to log nine contacts, earning a total of 26 points. Most of my QSOs were with ZS6 stations, with one QSO logged with a ZS5 station—always nice to have a bit of variety on the log.

I did, however, miss the first leg of the contest, which means no certificate for me this year. Lesson learned: next year, I’ll be making a bigger effort to participate in all legs so I can proudly collect those participation certificates.

All in all, it was a fun and relaxed way to spend an early morning—good coffee, good company on the airwaves, and a few more callsigns in the logbook. ☕📻
